Sotoura Beach: Shimoda's sheltered bay

Do · Shimoda · Originally covered on this site in 2017 (in Japanese); rewritten in English and updated 2026-10-24.

A calm, enclosed bay close to Shimoda, good for paddling, kayaks and SUP when the open coast is rough.

Sotoura is a small sandy bay just east of Shimoda's harbour, closed off by headlands so that the water stays calm when the surf is up elsewhere. It is a relaxed family beach in summer and a good place to try a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard.
