Komuroyama Park azaleas (late April – early May)
About 100,000 azaleas of some 40 varieties cover the slopes of Mount Komuro above Ito in spring.
Komuroyama Park, on a small volcanic hill 321 metres high near Kawana in Ito, is planted with around 100,000 azaleas of about 40 varieties. In spring they cover the slopes in red, pink and white, with Sagami Bay and, on clear days, Mount Fuji in the distance.
When
Sources give mid-April to early May for the bloom; the azalea viewing party (Tsutsuji Matsuri) takes place in that window with food stalls and a flea market. Check the dates for the current year.
Getting there
About 15 minutes by taxi from JR Ito station; there are also buses. Parking fills quickly during the festival. A lift goes to the top of the hill.
